Duration: Oct. 1, 1994 - Jan. 13, 1995 (104 days)
Effect on the Season: The season was shortened from 84 to 48 games, costing a total of 468 games. The All-Star Game also was canceled. The season ran from Jan. 20 to May 3, the first and only time the regular season extended into May. No interconference play was scheduled for this season.
Result: The lockout followed the 1992 players’ strike, through which the players earned larger playoff bonuses and changes to free agency. This time the owners fought back by pushing a salary cap. They failed, though the players compromised on several issues, such as free agency, arbitration and a rookie salary cap. However, this set the stage for the epic lockout 10 years later.
Fallout: Negotiations resulted in the reduction of the season to 82 games. The lockout eventually led to two Canadian teams moving to the U.S. - the Quebec Nordiques to Denver and the Winnipeg Jets to Phoenix. But the largest effect was the unresolved issue of the salary cap, which metastasized in the season-canceling 2004 lockout.
