1988 Cincinnati Bengals
The 1988 Cincinnati Bengals were a juggernaut on the offensive side of the ball. They led the league in offense and in scoring offense while amassing a 12-4 record and the top seed in the AFC. The potent offense was led by the NFL MVP, QB Boomer Esiason, and RB phenom Ickey Woods. The Bengals weaknesses all came on the other side of the ball, and they are arguably the worst defense to ever make the Super Bowl, ranking 17th (of 28) in both total defense and scoring defense. The Bengals played in one of the more exciting Super Bowls, with Joe Montana leading the 49ers on a late 92-yard 4th quarter drive to beat Cincinnati 20-16. It doesn’t help the historical view of the Bengals that they were the first team to lose to a six loss squad in the Super Bowl.
