Syracuse Orange basketball coach Jim Boeheim is being sued over a fatal accident he was involved in nearly two years ago that took the life of 51-year-old Jorge Jimenez.
During the accident, the 75-year-old coach swerved to avoid a disabled car and hit Jimenez with his SUV following the Orange winning a game over Louisville in February of 2019. Boeheim called 911 after the crash and was not accused of any wrongdoing in the tragic accident.
The four-page lawsuit filed Monday in Onondaga County Supreme Court on behalf of Jimenez’s family by attorney Terence O’Connor alleges the coach’s actions were “negligent, reckless and wanton,” according to Syracuse.com.
The lawsuit is seeking an unspecified settlement.
“This is something that will be with me for the rest of my life,” Boeheim said in 2019. “Tuesday it’s not going to be better. It’s not going to be better next week. It’s not going to be better next month. It’s not going to be better next year. This is something that’s there forever for me.”
Boeheim has been the head coach at Syracuse for 44 years, led the program to five Final Fours, and won the national championship in 2003.
The 2020-21 NCAA men’s basketball season is set to tip off on November 25.
