In what was one of the more astonishing and bizarre ends to an NCAA tournament game, Butler managed to emerge victorious. After the Bulldogs made a go-ahead layup with 2.2 seconds left, star guard Shelvin Mack inexplicably fouled Pitt forward Gilbert Brown on the inbounds play less than a second later. Brown, a 78 percent free throw shooter, sank the first free throw, then missed the second. On the ensuing battle for the rebound, Matt Howard managed to snare the board before being fouled by Nasir Robinson. With the game tied at 70, Howard knocked down the first free throw, purposely missed the second, and Butler moved on to its second consecutive Sweet Sixteen.
