With just 90 seconds remaining in overtime, the Capitals needed to make something happen to avoid further overtime. When Marc Staal's clearing pass did not make it out of the Rangers' zone, the home team took advantage. Jason Arnott found Alex Semin in front of the net for the game-winning slapshot. It was Semin's second point of the game (he assisted on Alex Ovechkin's game-tying goal in the third period) as the Caps took a 1-0 series lead on the Rangers by the score of 2-1.
