Alabama will play Clemson in the College Football Playoff title game on January 9, but Lane Kiffin won't be there.
Kiffin, the Crimson Tide's offensive coordinator, had already accepted the head coaching job at Florida Atlantic, but the plan was for him to remain in his current position until the end of the season. That is not happening.
Alabama head coach Nick Saban announced Monday that Kiffin would depart for Florida Atlantic and incoming offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian would take over immediately.
"We made the decision because it was in the best interest of our players, our program and for Lane for him to assume his duties at Florida Atlantic," Nick Saban said. "We mutually agreed that this was best for both programs."
"Obviously, we are in a unique situation where we have our next offensive coordinator already on staff," Saban announced. "We have full confidence that Sark will step in right away and make this a smooth transition."
